about the place
Sabugal is a border town in the district of Guarda, in the Terras de Riba-Côa region, beside the river Côa. The town was founded in the late twelfth century by Afonso IX of León and became part of Portugal through the Treaty of Alcañices in 1297. The castle dominates the town, and the Museu do Sabugal hosts the exhibition that opens the festival.
