history

Sabugal is a border city in the district of Guarda, in the Terras de Riba-Côa, overlooking the river Côa. The town was founded in the late twelfth century by King Afonso IX of León, who granted it a royal charter, and passed to Portugal under the Treaty of Alcanizes in 1297, which handed the lands on the right bank of the Côa to the kingdom.
King Dinis confirmed the charter and King Manuel issued a new one in 1515. The castle and the remains of the town walls still dominate the old quarter, alongside the pelourinho (pillory), the Fonte Velha, the Casa da Rainha and the Cruzeiro dos Centenários. In 1811, during the French invasions, the Battle of Gravato was fought nearby.
In 1936 the Junta de Colonização Interna established the Colónia Agrícola de Martim Rei, with 36 settlers; the colony's school and chapel were designed by the architect Rogério de Azevedo. Sabugal was raised to city status in the early twenty-first century, and in 2013 its parish merged with that of Aldeia de Santo António.
