about the place
There are places that grow slowly, in the shadow of others, until the day they assert themselves with a voice of their own — and Pedrouços, in the municipality of Maia, is one such place. Ancient at its roots, it once held city status as far back as the 11th century, yet lived for centuries as part of the neighbouring Águas Santas, until the quiet stubbornness of its people made it a parish in its own right. Its heart beats in the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Nativity, of Baroque tradition, where the community gathers, prays and celebrates a devotion that spans the centuries. At the table, kid goat, roast lamb and Bacalhau à Lidador are never missing, and one day a week the fair fills the village with colour and voices. Those who visit Pedrouços carry with them the echo of a centuries-old faith and the memory of a people who turned struggle into a form of love for their land.
