about the place

Glória do Ribatejo is a town and civil parish in the municipality of Salvaterra de Magos, in the district of Santarém, with 3,224 inhabitants according to the 2011 census. Its origins date back to the 14th century: King D. Pedro I ordered the construction of a church in 1362, as evidenced by a medieval stone inscription on the façade, and in 1364 granted privileges to attract settlers. The parish was created in 1966 with areas detached from Muge, was merged with Granho in 2013 and restored in 2025; the village, known simply as Glória until 1968, has held town status since 1993. Between 1951 and 1996 it hosted a RARET transmitter station, which broadcast the programmes of Radio Free Europe. Its heritage includes the Church of Our Lady of Glory, the Ethnographic Museum, the Traditional Adobe House, the Fonte Velha and the Fornos de Montoia, and the Bordados da Glória do Ribatejo embroideries are listed in the national inventory.
