history

Glória do Ribatejo is a town and civil parish in the municipality of Salvaterra de Magos, in the district of Santarém, with 3,224 inhabitants recorded in the 2011 census; its patron saint is Nossa Senhora da Glória. Its origins date back to the fourteenth century: King D. Pedro I ordered a church to be built in 1362, as evidenced by a medieval stone inscription on the façade, and in 1364 he granted exemptions and liberties to encourage settlement. The parish was established in 1966 with places detached from Muge, was merged with Granho in the 2013 reorganisation, and restored in 2025. Until 1968 the settlement was known simply as Glória, and it has held town status since 20 May 1993. Between 1951 and 1996 it hosted a RARET transmitting station, which broadcast the programmes of Rádio Europa Livre. Its heritage includes the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória (Church of Nossa Senhora da Glória), the Museu Etnográfico (Ethnographic Museum), the Casa Tradicional em adobe (Traditional Adobe House, a heritage nucleus since 1988), the Fonte Velha, the Fornos de Montoia, and the Igreja de Santa Luzia do Cocharro (Church of Santa Luzia do Cocharro); the Bordados da Glória do Ribatejo are listed in the national inventory.
