Vila Chã is the heart of the city of Vale de Cambra. In 1926, the decree that abolished the municipality of Macieira de Cambra made Vila Chã the seat of the new municipality, and the place of Gandra became known as Vale de Cambra. The town was elevated to city status in 1993. Since 2013, Vila Chã has formed a civil parish union with Codal and Vila Cova de Perrinho.
