about the place
Celorico da Beira lies in the heart of Beira Interior Norte, in the District of Guarda, nestled against the first slopes of Serra da Estrela. The landscape combines open valleys, granite villages and the proximity of Portugal's highest mountain range. The Municipality has very ancient roots: in 1169, King D. Afonso Henriques granted it a royal charter to promote the settlement and defence of the territory. Celorico da Beira is also renowned as one of the leading production centres of queijo Serra da Estrela.
