about the place

In the heart of Chaves, in the district of Vila Real, the parish of Santa Maria Maior preserves the old townhouses and streets that give the flaviense city its soul. For a long time it was the only parish in the entire municipality. The Igreja de Santa Maria Maior (Church of Santa Maria Maior), a Romanesque temple from the mid-thirteenth century, was built over an earlier Visigothic church and, before that, a Roman temple.

history

In the heart of Chaves, where the old buildings cluster around streets that have witnessed centuries of passage, lies the freguesia of Santa Maria Maior. It is here, right in the centre of the city of Chaves, that history breathes most deeply — a land that was, for a very long time, the only parish in the entire concelho, the mother church from which the religious and community life of Chaves radiated.
The memory of this freguesia is inseparable from that of the church that lends it its name. The Igreja de Santa Maria Maior (Church of Santa Maria Maior) served for centuries as the seat of the parish, passing under the authority of the dioceses of Braga, Miranda do Douro, and Braga again. In this land one feels the layers of time stacked one upon another: it is said that the original Romanesque temple was born in the mid-thirteenth century, perhaps even in the twelfth, raised upon an earlier Visigothic church, which in turn stood upon an even older Roman temple. Few places express the longevity of Chaves as eloquently as these stones, which have seen Romans, Visigoths, and countless generations of flavienses pass by.
The people of Santa Maria Maior are the people of the living centre of Chaves. They live surrounded by heritage, with the Câmara Municipal a stone's throw away, the Torre de Menagem peering over the rooftops, and the Museu da Região Flaviense keeping watch over the history of the land. It is a daily life built on closeness, where the square, the church and the museum form the everyday backdrop for those who live here and those who arrive.
The heritage of this freguesia has soul and depth. The Igreja de Santa Maria Maior, listed as a Property of Public Interest, is an open book of architectural styles: to the original Romanesque body were added, during the great works of the sixteenth century, two Mannerist portals integrated into the existing structure. Inside, its three naves open beneath a nineteenth-century wooden ceiling, while Baroque altarpieces and traditional Portuguese azulejos lend colour and light to the space. In an annex of the mother church, the Museu de Arte Sacra da Região Flaviense, a branch of the Museu da Região Flaviense, houses and displays the religious art gathered here over the centuries. Those who visit Chaves and make their way up to the historic centre will find, in this ensemble, one of the city's most remarkable landmarks — a place where faith, art and history go hand in hand.
In its customs, the freguesia keeps alive the flame of Chaves' collective traditions. The Grupo Folclórico de Santa Maria Maior and the Club de Chaves are rooted here, carrying forward the songs, dances and festive habits of the land. Among these customs is the distribution of caramelos (sweets), a popular and heartfelt gesture that accompanies the community's moments of celebration and forms part of the affective memory of those who grew up in these parts. They are simple gestures, but it is through them that a people's identity is passed from generation to generation.
At the table, Santa Maria Maior shares with the whole of Chaves a gastronomy and confectionery of its own character, recognised for their quality and personality. This is a land where folar de Chaves (a traditional local bread) holds a place of honour, and where the celebrated Pastel de Chaves (a crispy pastry with a savoury filling, protected by its own Geographical Indication) continues to win over all who taste it — a symbol of the city's cuisine known far beyond the borders of the concelho. The local produce does the rest: fumeiro (smoked charcuterie), varied meats, bread and so many other regional flavours that make up a comforting, generous and unhurried cuisine, as the Transmontane tradition demands. To taste Chaves is also a way of getting to know it, and Santa Maria Maior sits at the heart of that discovery.
To visit this freguesia is, in essence, to enter Chaves through its front door: to walk its historic centre, raise one's eyes to the Torre de Menagem, linger in the Igreja de Santa Maria Maior, and let oneself be embraced by the flavours and the people of a land that has kept intact its condition as the heart of the city.
