Merged with Pedorido and Paraíso in 2013, it regained its status as an independent parish under Law no. 25-A/2025.
history
Raiva is a town in the municipality of Castelo de Paiva, seat of the parish of the same name, 12 km from the municipal headquarters.
The inquiries of 1258 refer to it for the first time as 'villa honorata', with special privileges before the crown, and those of 1290 call it 'Villa de Rabia', the honra of D. Gonçalo Viegas. Raiva was a honra and a concelho, and its pelourinho (pillory) has been listed as a building of public interest since 1933. From its more distant past remain the mamoas (burial mounds) of Monte Grande and archaeological remains in Folgoso, Midões and Monte Alto.
Coal mining left its mark on the land, with traces at Fôjo, near Folgoso, the former mines of Terramonte and of the Companhia Portuguesa das Minas de Gondarém, and buildings such as the Hospital das Minas, the Cooperativa de Consumo and the Cinema da Estação. The parish is home to the chapels of São Lourenço, Santo Ildefonso, São José and São Caetano, and on Monte de São Domingos, at almost 500 metres, a chapel with a carillon and views over the Douro valley.
Raiva was elevated to town status on 1 July 2003. In 2013 it was merged with Pedorido and Paraíso, in the union of which it was the seat, and Law no. 25-A/2025 restored the parish. In 2011 it had 2,312 inhabitants.
