Festivities in Honour of Our Lord Jesus of the Afflicted

The Festas em Honra de Nosso Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos, in Alcoentre, in the municipality of Azambuja, are an annual celebration with a long tradition, marked by processions and moments of community gathering. They usually take place in September and bring the local population together around their patron saint, with local crafts, gastronomy and music accompanying the days of festivity. The devotion to Nosso Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos dates back to the nineteenth century and remains alive through a traditional pilgrimage and a popular open-air festival. One of the central moments is the procession that leaves the chapel towards the church, a gesture that reflects the ancient bond between faith and the life of the land. Part of a municipality with a long history, now within Azambuja, this festival continues to be one of the most significant religious traditions of Alcoentre, celebrated from generation to generation with the same sense of community.

Founded somewhere in the 10th century and holding its first municipal charter as early as 1174, this corner of the municipality of Azambuja carries an antiquity that is felt more than told. Its people inherited a love for working the land and for shared life, a way of being that passes through generations without fading. And no one leaves indifferent without tasting the torricado, king of the table in these parts — toasted bread drizzled with good olive oil and served with salt cod, alongside the honey and olive oil that carry the sun and the toil of those who produce them.
