about the place
Vouzela is in the District of Viseu, in the lands of Lafões, 30 kilometres from Viseu and close to the thermal spa of São Pedro do Sul. The municipality was established in 1836, when the former municipality of Lafões was divided between Vouzela and São Pedro do Sul. It is the birthplace of São Frei Gil, a Dominican friar and patron saint of the town, of D. Duarte de Almeida, standard-bearer to King Afonso V, and of the Brazilian pioneer João Ramalho.
