about the place
Vinhais is located in the far northeast of Portugal, in the District of Bragança, nestled against the Parque Natural de Montesinho. The landscape is one of granite plateaus, deep valleys and centuries-old oak trees, where isolation has shaped a singular culture. The municipality has ancient roots, with archaeological remains such as the hillfort of Ciradelha and the proto-historic settlement of Castrilhão. In 1253, D. Afonso III granted a royal charter to the town, confirmed by D. Manuel I in 1512. The name Vinhais is linked to the region's winemaking tradition.
