about the place
Sertã is located in the centre of Portugal, in the District of Castelo Branco, amid a landscape of mountain ranges and valleys carved by the river Sertã and the Castelo do Bode reservoir. The Municipality received its royal charter from King D. Manuel I on 20 October 1513, although its elevation to town status had occurred earlier, in 1455. Local history bears the mark of Islamic presence — visible in the origins of the castle — and of centuries of governance by the Order of Malta and the Casa do Infantado.
