about the place
Oliveira do Hospital is located in the interior of Beira Alta, in the District of Coimbra, in a landscape carved between mountain ranges and valleys that includes the foothills of Serra do Açor and the territory of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Estrela. Its name derives from a Commandery of the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, granted by Queen D. Teresa in 1120 — an origin that sets this town apart from any other. In 1514, D. Manuel I awarded it its first royal charter, an anniversary marked five centuries later with initiatives throughout 2014.
