Almeirim lies in the heart of Ribatejo, on the left bank of the Tejo river, in a fertile plain historically devoted to vineyards, melons and orange groves. Founded as a town by D. João I in 1411 and granted a royal charter in 1483, it became the preferred winter residence of the Portuguese royal family, a legacy still read in the place names and in the remains of the Paço. Its four parishes — Almeirim, Benfica do Ribatejo, Fazendas de Almeirim and Raposa — preserve that past among open fields and the wide river.
