about the place
In the northern part of the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, this union brings together Canedo, Vale and Vila Maior, between the Douro valley and the inland hills of the Feira region. Canedo, granted town status in 1997, received its royal charter from King Afonso II in 1212 and encompasses the former parishes of Várzea, Mota and Canedo. A church already stood in Várzea as early as 897, on the site where the chapel of S. Paio (Chapel of S. Paio) stands today.
history
Canedo lies in the north of the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, on the left bank of the river Douro. The name derives, according to José Pedro Machado, from the Low Latin cannetus, meaning a reed bed. The town brings together three former parishes: Várzea, already mentioned in 897, Mota, and Canedo itself.
Two Benedictine monasteries once stood here: that of Mosteirô, a convent of nuns, beside the Douro, and that of Mosteiro, next to the parish church, attributed to D. Telo Guterres around 950. Canedo received its royal charter from D. Afonso II on 1 June 1212 and was granted town status in 1997.
The parish church (Igreja Paroquial), dating from the seventeenth century, features gilded woodwork and three Renaissance altars; in the tower stands a fifteenth-century statue of St Peter, the patron saint. In Várzea, the Capela de S. Paio stands on the site of the ancient church recorded in 897. In Rebordelo, a stone table is preserved where representatives of Feira, Castelo de Paiva, Arouca and Gondomar would settle the boundaries of their municipalities.
The former river port of Carvoeiro, through which Canedo was connected to the Douro, was submerged by the reservoir of the Crestuma-Lever dam. In 2013, Canedo was merged with Vale and Vila Maior to form a civil parish union.
