history

Sanfins de Ferreira, also known as São Pedro Fins de Ferreira or simply Sanfins, is a settlement in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira and the seat of the parish of the same name. It covers approximately 6.5 km².
Human settlement here is ancient: the parish is home to the Citânia de Sanfins, an Iron Age hillfort settlement, and Roman coins, votive altars and rock-cut tombs dating from the 7th century have been found in the area. The region appears in 10th-century records in the Livro de Mumadona Dias. In 1111, Soeiro Viegas, lord of the Couto de Fins de Ferreira, founded a monastery here, and the Inquirições of 1220 and 1258 make reference to the church. In the 14th century the land was an honour of the Constable D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, and in the early 16th century King D. Manuel I made the church and monastery a commenda of the Order of Christ.
The patron saint is São Pedro; in older references the church appears under the invocation of São Félix. The church was rebuilt in 1865 and preserves fragments of mid-16th-century frescoes. In 1882 the parish was transferred from the Archdiocese of Braga to the Diocese of Porto. The Solar dos Brandões houses the Museu Arqueológico da Citânia de Sanfins (Archaeological Museum), and other points of interest include the Cruzeiro dos Templários, the Penedo das Ninfas and the Pedra Formosa da Citânia.
In 2013 the parish was merged with Lamoso and Codessos, and Law no. 25-A/2025 restored it as a separate parish. In 2011 it had 3,139 inhabitants.
