history

Canedo is a town in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, and the seat of the parish of the same name. The parish covers around 28 km² and extends to the river Douro, where the river port of Carvoeiro once stood, now submerged beneath the reservoir of the Crestuma-Lever dam.
The town brings together three former parishes: Várzea, already documented in 897, Mota and Canedo. Two Benedictine monasteries once stood here: a convent of nuns at Mosteirô, founded in 897, and a monastery of monks at Mosteiro, attributed to D. Telo Guterres around 950 and donated by D. Dinis to the Bishop of Porto in 1304. Canedo received its own royal charter from D. Afonso II on 1 June 1212. In Rebordelo there is a stone table where representatives of Feira, Castelo de Paiva, Arouca and Gondomar would fix the boundaries between municipalities.
The patron saint is Saint Peter. The parish church dates from the 17th century, with gilded woodwork and three altars in the Renaissance style, and bears on the front of its tower a 15th-century statue of Saint Peter. In Várzea stand the chapels of São Paio (chapels of São Paio), the old and the new. The building of the former monastery is today a private residence, the Casa do Mosteirô.
Canedo was elevated to town status in 1997. In 2013 it was merged with Vale and Vila Maior, and Law no. 25-A/2025 restored the parish. In 2011 it had 6,044 inhabitants.
