history

Aver-o-Mar is a town in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, to the north of the city, and the seat of the parish of the same name. The oldest known place name is Abonemar, recorded in 1099, and its settlement is attributed to D. Lourenço Fernandes da Cunha, a knight of the honour of Varzim. Around 1656 it was annexed to the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim by royal decree.
For centuries it belonged to the parish of Amorim, and it was only on 10 August 1922 that it became a parish in its own right. It was raised to town status on 1 July 2003. In 2013 it was merged with Amorim and Terroso to form the União das Freguesias de Aver-o-Mar, Amorim e Terroso, and Law no. 25-A/2025 restored the parish.
The patron is Nossa Senhora das Neves (Our Lady of the Snows). As early as the 15th century there was a chapel bearing this dedication, which was enlarged in the 18th century by the nuns of Santa Clara do Porto. On the beach of Esteiro stands the Moinho Luísa Dacosta. The parish traditionally comprised 18 places, now neighbourhoods, among them Agro-Velho, Aldeia Nova, Boucinha, Caramuja, Paranho, Perlinha, Santo André and Sesins. In 2011 it had 8,675 inhabitants.
