history
Anta is a town in the municipality of Espinho and the seat of the parish of the same name. The place name is linked to a dolmen found in the area, which points to a very ancient settlement. Documents from the 9th and 11th centuries already refer to the locality, and the 'Testamento de Vila de Anta' is known to date from 1037. In the first half of the 11th century, the abbot Tudeildo founded a monastery here, and by 1220 Anta was a parish of the Diocese of Porto.
Espinho grew out of the territory of Anta and separated from it in 1886. Anta remained in the municipality of Feira until 1926, when it was transferred to that of Espinho, and was granted town status on 27 May 1993. In 2013 it was merged with Guetim to form the União das Freguesias de Anta e Guetim; Lei n.º 25-A/2025 restored the parish.
The parish brings together the settlements of Anta, Idanha, Esmojães, Quinta, Ponte de Anta and Guimbra. Esmojães corresponds to the former parish of Ermógenes, which was dissolved following a severe epidemic. The patron saint is São Martinho, to whom the parish church is dedicated. In Esmojães stands the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Altos-Céus e S. Mamede (chapel), with the springs of Pereiro and Cassufas, and the parish also contains the Capela de São Vicente and the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, as well as several wayside crosses.
In 2011 the parish had 10,363 inhabitants; in 1864 there were 2,635.
