1st Summer Carnival

The 1st Summer Carnival of Marinhais, in the parish of Marinhais, municipality of Salvaterra de Magos, marked its debut with two days of joy, entertainment and music. Born as a new festive moment for the local community, the event is part of the wider set of cultural and ethnographic festivities of Salvaterra de Magos. As this is a first edition, there is little history yet to tell, for it is only now beginning to be written. We express, from the outset, our recognition to all those who contributed to making it happen and to all those who took part, making this debut possible.

Marinhais is one of those Ribatejo villages that carry the soul of the floodplain within them, with a wide horizon and the scent of the Tagus flowing nearby. Once known as Foros de Muge, it made its name through hardworking people, accustomed to tending the land and working the fields, and with a culture of campinos and bulls that is not folklore but a way of feeling. At the table, one savours flavours that taste of the river, such as eel stew or fried eels with bean rice, washed down with the region's wines. Just next door, in the municipality of Salvaterra de Magos, it is well worth discovering the devotion of the Igreja Matriz de São Paulo and the remains of the former Paço Real. It is at this crossroads between working the land and celebration that the 1º Carnaval de Verão is now born.
