about the place
Vimioso lies in the far northeast of Portugal, in the District of Bragança, amid a Transmontane plateau landscape that stretches to the border with Spain. In 1516, King Manuel I granted a royal charter to the settlement, raising it to the status of a Municipality. A few years later, in 1534, King João III bestowed upon D. Francisco de Portugal the title of Count of Vimioso, binding the name of the land to the nobility of the kingdom for ever. In 1492, the region also welcomed Jewish refugees who settled here and left their mark on the local cultural and economic fabric.
