Vieira do Minho spreads across the foothills of Serra da Cabreira, in the heart of the District of Braga, where narrow valleys shelter granite villages and the river Cávado was dammed to form the Albufeira do Ermal reservoir. The town received its royal charter from King Manuel I in 1515, and its more recent history was shaped by its part in the Liberal Wars and the Maria da Fonte movement, a popular uprising of the nineteenth century that shook the north of the country.
