about the place
Ponte de Lima stretches along the river Lima, in the far north of Portugal, in the District of Viana do Castelo. The landscape combines the deep green of the Minho with the gentle slopes that frame the river. It was here that D. Teresa granted, on 4 March 1125, one of the oldest Portuguese royal charters, making Ponte de Lima the oldest town in the country. The crossing of the Lima was already ensured at that time by the medieval bridge of Roman origin, a route taken by armies, merchants and pilgrims over the centuries.
