about the place
Figueiró dos Vinhos is situated in the interior of the District of Leiria, in a landscape of schist mountains, deeply carved streams and dense woodland. The territory holds human memory dating back to the Late Bronze Age, documented at the Castro da Serra do Castelo. In 1204, D. Pedro Afonso granted a royal charter to the town, making it one of the oldest municipalities in Portugal. In the twentieth century, the beauty of the landscape attracted artists such as José Malhoa, who found here both inspiration and refuge.
