about the place
Estarreja is located in the District of Aveiro, on the eastern edge of the Ria de Aveiro, in a landscape of water, saltmarsh and open fields shaped over the centuries by the Antuã estuary. The place name derives precisely from that estuary, already referenced by the Roman writer Pliny. The first documentary mention of the settlement dates from 1334, when it was still known as Antuã — a name that endured until the 17th century, when it gave way to Estarreja. In 1519, King Manuel I granted a royal charter to the town, reorganising the territory and extending the privileges of its inhabitants.
