about the place
Câmara de Lobos stretches along the southern coast of Madeira, between steep cliffs and a bay where colourful fishing boats rest on the sand. It was here that João Gonçalves Zarco landed in 1420, making this place the first inhabited point on the island. The name comes from the sea wolves that once abounded in the bay. In 1996, the town was raised to city status, affirming an identity forged between the sea and the mountains of the interior.
