about the place
Batalha is located in the centre of Portugal, in the District of Leiria, in a landscape shaped by the Maciço Calcário Estremenho. The origins of the Municipality are directly linked to the construction of the Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória, ordered to be built after the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. This monument became the heart around which the town grew, defining its identity for ever. Local gastronomy preserves age-old flavours: rice morcelas, the cavacas from Reguengo do Fetal, and salt cod tibornadas.
