Aveiro stretches along the western edge of Portugal, embraced by the Ria de Aveiro and its canals that cut silently through the city. The landscape is divided between salt flats, low-lying islands and a coastal strip of dunes that culminates in Costa Nova. The town received its first royal charter in 1515, and over the centuries it has consolidated traditions that endure to this day, such as the Feira de Março, one of the oldest fairs in the country, and the production of ovos moles, a convent confectionery that has become a symbol of the city.
