about the place
Amarante rises on the banks of the Tâmega, in the District of Porto, between the Serra do Marão and the Serra da Aboboreira, in a landscape of deep valleys and slopes covered in vegetation. Human presence in the region dates back to the Stone Age, with traces found on the ridges of the Aboboreira. The history of the urban settlement is intertwined with the figure of São Gonçalo, a preacher who arrived in the 13th century, ordered the construction of a bridge over the Tâmega and founded a hermitage that would become the seed of the city. The Mosteiro de São Gonçalo was built in the 16th century, and Amarante was elevated to city status in 1985.
