Alvito is located in the Baixo Alentejo, in the District of Beja, amid a landscape of open plains and intense light. The first royal charter was granted by King D. Dinis in 1280, and the town gained new prominence in 1475 when D. Afonso V elevated João Fernandes da Silveira to the dignity of first Baron of Alvito. The town preserves an architecture that blends Gothic, Manueline and Mudéjar influences, a singular feature of this inland Alentejo region.
